Our Take on Clinical Decision Support - Deep Dive

A solid approach to Clinical Decision Support (CDS) begins with strong engagement from your clinical leaders.  At the other end of the spectrum, the approach includes comprehensive training materials so that all stakeholders know what to expect.

Along the way, a key component of an organization's approach to CDS is to regularly challenge staff to confirm that the Five Rights are being evaluated throughout the process.  And, perhaps it goes without saying, but a focus on scaling content in such a way so as not to create a maintenance nightmare is wise.  So what are the Five Rights?

  • Right Information
    • Correct, evidence based, etc.?

  • Right Person
    • Best person to take action, who is responsible?

  • Right Format
    • Which functionality should be leveraged to present the intervention?

  • Right Channel
    • The CHR may not always be best, have all options been considered?

  • Right Workflow
    • When does it make the most sense given subsequent actions that may be taken or outcomes that may be derived?

Beyond the Five Rights, it is critical at this juncture in healthcare's movement towards value-based care, that your organization's approach to CDS is also highly integrated with population health care delivery strategies, regulatory reporting, and other related initiatives.  Doing so can go a long way to avoid the maintenance headache spoken about earlier.

Done really well, not only can CDS lose its reputation as an annoyance, it can dramatically support the organization in its journey towards deriving value from the CHR.

We can help at any stage of your CDS roll-out.  Whether you are just starting to think about an approach to your strategy, need to optimize components, or require an entire review and overhaul, we have done it before and can efficiently do so again for your organization.
