Yale Healthcare Conference - Recap: Afternoon Breakout

Panel on Rethinking Value

A group of our country’s next generation of healthcare leaders spoke to the challenge and need for getting patient-centric payment models right.  Panelists included:

  • Diwen Chen – Senior Director of Payment Model Development, Aetna a CVS Health Company

  • Kate Goodrich – VP for Clinical Analytics and Trend within the Clinical Solutions Segment, Humana

  • Farzad Mostashari – CEO and Founder, Aledade

  • Amol Navathe – Asst. Professor of Health Policy and Medicine & Director of Payment Insights Team, U Penn

Key takeaway:

We need to think beyond ‘making patients accountable’ as we develop new payment models.  Studies are pretty clear that when patients have to pay more, they do less bad for themselves, but they also do less good.  That said, when holding providers accountable we need to work with a reasonable number of quality measures to avoid administrative overburdening.

Other compelling nuggets:

  • “Orient all of your incentives around the problem(s) that you’re trying to solve.” - Kate Goodrich

  • In most cases, we need multiple complementary solutions to improve outcomes.

    • In a study where patients were given a full supply of medications necessary post heart attack, on average they were still non-compliant.  We need innovative tools to supplement!

  • Given stiff competition, payers are differentiating themselves in the Medicare Advantage (MA) space by offering social benefits:  payment for groceries, transportations, etc.

We’d love to hear from you on LinkedIn or Twitter on this Thought Question:

How can you partner with MA admins to deliver improved outcomes to patients and close gaps in healthcare equity?
