Yale Healthcare Conference - Recap: Morning Keynote

Jaewon Ryu, MD, JD – President & CEO Geisinger

Dr. Ryu gave a talk jam-packed with data and efforts making a difference in the value-based world.

Key takeaways: Get upstream of issues and use data to optimize resource utilization.

Topic of note:  We all know equitable access to care is a problem throughout the country.  But particularly enlightening is that we have clear data to compel leaders and innovators to dedicate resources and support where it’s needed most.  Dr. Ryu shared a visual from U.S. News (at this link) that told the story of how cities are doing with regards to care access when the percentage of the pocket community was predominantly black:

  • Doing Poorly: Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia

  • Doing Better: Chicago, Atlanta

Certainly, that’s not to say there isn’t plenty of work left to do in the ‘doing better’ cities.  But as I have more and more conversations on the topic of innovations in healthcare technology, I do wonder if this information could equitably guide the location of pilot projects aimed to demonstrate new solution efficacy.

Other compelling nuggets:

  • Montana has jaw-dropping Medicaid reimbursement rates compared to Medicare – 150%! Probably due in part to their bucket of funding being larger per capita than most states, but stunning, nonetheless.

  • Geisinger removed RVUs from compensation models largely due to healthcare access issues. Procedural scheduling and imaging read wait times dropped precipitously for care previously less profitable under the RVU model

  • Health benefits of fresh food pharmacies led to double or triple efficacy when compared to traditional pharmaceutical interventions.

  • Supplementing care coordination with services in the home brought PMPM down $400/month.

  • Every CT at Geisinger gets read by an ML algorithm first to prioritize physician reads.

  • Colorectal cancer is discovered every 150 screenings on average across the industry, through the implementation of pre-screening segmentation analytics, Geisinger has brought such discoveries down to every 13 screens!

We’d love to hear from you on LinkedIn or Twitter on this Thought Question:

What are innovative ways you’ve been able to leverage data to improve outcomes and lower cost of care simultaneously?
